About the Foundation

The Madison Hornbuckle Foundation is a non-profit organization under the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians that offers financial assistance to families that have children with cancer.  The Foundation was established June 2010 in honor of Madison Hornbuckle who lost her young life as a result of cancer.  Madison saw the devastation brought about on families that have children with cancer and wanted to find a way to improve their lives.  This Foundation is working towards that goal in Madison’s honor. The foundation serves children and families living within the counties of Swain, Jackson, Graham, Cherokee, and Haywood, North Carolina.

Our Mission

To ease the financial burden on families with children battling cancer and to allow families to focus on treatment & care.

How we can help

Purpose

Financial assistance to families provided by the Madison Hornbuckle Children’s Cancer Foundation (MHCCF) is made possible by support from generous donors. The mission of MHCCF is to ease the financial burden on families with children battling cancer and to allow families to focus on treatment & care.

Eligibility

Those families with a child diagnosed with cancer before their 18th birthday and treated before their 21st birthday may be considered for financial assistance. The family must have a permanent residence within the counties of Swain, Jackson, Graham, Haywood, Macon or Cherokee, North Carolina. Families experiencing a hardship, financial burden, or who are unable to maintain employment due to a child’s cancer treatments will be prioritized for financial assistance. Financial assistance is provided directly to the family for housing, utilities, transportation, and food costs. Payment will be made to the parent, guardian or primary caregiver.

Application Required

Families are required to complete an application for Financial Assistance and provide supporting documentation requested by MHCCF. The MHCCF Board of Directors will review all applications for assistance and determine an amount of assistance to provide. The board may consult with subject matter experts in review of all applications submitted and may request, at its discretion, additional information from the applicant. Applications are required to be supported by a statement of diagnosis from a licensed medical doctor.

Amount of Assistance and Payment

MHCCF may approve up to $3,000.00 every 3 months while a child is actively receiving cancer treatments. MHCCF may approve up to $3,000.00 in the first 3 months of remission of the child’s cancer. Financial assistance payments are paid to the child’s parent, guardian, or caregiver by check. The MHCCF may also provide assistance in the form of a VISA Gift Card. MHCCF will make assistance payments to families so long as funds are available in its reserve account to do so.

Attestation

Applicants are required to review and accept an attestation statement that the information provided to MHCCF is true and accurate.
